Religious Education
Intent
At East Claydon Church of England School, Religious Education is at the heart of our curriculum and plays a vital role in helping children understand themselves, others and the world around them. Rooted in our Christian vision of"Building Each Other Up", RE enables pupils to explore big questions about belief, meaning, purpose and identity.
Through the study of Christianity and a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, children develop religious literacy, critical thinking and respectful dialogue. We want every pupil to leave East Claydon with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to engage thoughtfully with diverse beliefs and perspectives in modern Britain and the wider world.
Implementation
Our RE curriculum is informed by the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education RE Scheme of work. Christianity is studied in every year group and accounts for at least 50% of curriculum time, alongside carefully planned learning about other religious and non-religious worldviews.
Lessons are organised around engaging enquiries and key questions that encourage children to investigate, reflect, discuss and evaluate. Pupils learn through theological, philosophical and human and social science approaches, helping them understand how religious and non-religious beliefs are expressed and lived.
Children explore sacred texts, artefacts, stories, beliefs, traditions and practices. They are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, consider different viewpoints and develop their own informed responses in a safe and respectful environment. Learning is enriched through visitors, visits and opportunities to encounter lived faith and belief where these enhance curriculum learning.
Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive for all pupils. Teachers adapt learning appropriately so that every child can achieve highly regardless of background, need or starting point
Impact
By the time they leave East Claydon, pupils will have developed secure knowledge and understanding of Christianity and a range of worldviews. They will be able to discuss beliefs confidently, use appropriate religious vocabulary and engage respectfully with different perspectives.
Children will develop the religious literacy needed to participate thoughtfully in a diverse society. They will learn to think critically, ask challenging questions, evaluate evidence and communicate reasoned opinions with kindness, courage and respect. Through RE, pupils are equipped to understand how beliefs shape people's lives and communities, enabling them to contribute positively to the world around them.

Religious Literacy
Religious literacy is central to our RE curriculum. We want pupils to be able to hold balanced, informed and respectful conversations about religion and worldviews. Through developing knowledge, understanding and dialogue skills, children learn to engage thoughtfully with complex questions and differing viewpoints.
